There are lots of radio stations these days that play “oldies.” These are hits from decades past that everyone still loves.
You turn on the music and imagine a different (better?) era.
In late 2024, after years of estrangement, Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon reunited for an emotional lunch, marking their first meeting in many years. Garfunkel initiated the conversation by asking Simon, “What happened? Why haven’t we seen each other?” Simon referenced a past interview where Garfunkel had made hurtful remarks, leading to their prolonged separation. Overcome with remorse, Garfunkel expressed his regret, stating, “Looking back, I guess I wanted to shake up the nice guy image of Simon & Garfunkel. Y’know what? I was a fool!”
Following their heartfelt discussion, the duo made plans to meet again. Garfunkel reflected on the reunion, saying, “For me, it was about wanting to make amends before it’s too late. It felt like we were back in a wonderful place.” He added, “As I think about it now, tears are rolling down … .”
This significant reconciliation has sparked hope among fans for potential future collaborations. Garfunkel’s son, Art Jr … mentioned, “I do think there is … .” He further suggested that with encouragement from their peers in the … this could lead to new material, introducing their timeless music to a new generation.
While no official plans for a musical reunion have been announced, this emotional meeting signifies a healing of old wounds and a renewed bond between the two legendary musicians.

One of the most popular eras is the 1960s. That decade saw the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and, of course, Simon and Garfunkel. The duo were known for being the face of the counterculture. They sang a number of hits, like “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “America.”
Their most popular song, though, is “The Sound of Silence.” It’s a dramatic, even haunting, song that is familiar from the first chords. The song was released not long after the JFK assassination. Some even believe that it was a direct response to that event.

Surprisingly enough, “The Sound of Silence” was a commercial flop. In the decades that followed, however, it’s gone on to enjoy massive radio play. Rolling Stone magazine named it one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Unfortunately the duo split up in the 70s. Paul Simon has seen a highly successful solo career in the years since. His album Graceland, in particular, is quite iconic.

If you missed your chance to experience the magic of seeing Simon and Garfunkel perform together, don’t worry. It looks like they set aside their differences for a special reunion. “The Sound of Silence” has never sounded this good. That’s the mark of a song that will stand the test of time.
