This German techno marching band might have just invented a whole new genre – and you need to hear what they did on this iconic Bill Withers soul hit. Nuremberg shoppers sure weren’t ready for what BrassPalast delivered on their streets last month, but the brass group quickly got the whole crowd dancing and clapping to their cover of “Ain’t No Sunshine.”
BrassPalast kicked off the performance with a stately and sombre horn section, but soon picked up the pace with a rollicking groove in the main riff. The band mixed spanky horn parts with a pulsing dance beat, making for an upbeat and fun cover of the timeless tune. You will definitely want to hear what the vocalist adds to the equation though, as he brings it to the next level!https://www.youtube.com/embed/r-EbGh2-DLM
The frontman delivered a soulful and aching vocal that brought to mind powerhouse modern soul vocalists like Teddy Swims. The singer really dug deep for the final big note, rising to the top of his range and getting a huge cheer from the crowd. The band kicked down the groove to a slow burn pace for the verse and got the crowd waving their arms along to the beat, before slamming the groove into overdrive and getting everyone dancing again.
Fans online praised BrassPalast for their original sound and added comments such as “This was already mesmerising before… the voice! A beautiful, intelligent, mischievous arrangement of a great song. The vocal takes it somewhere else.” and “Wow. Such a powerful and inventive arrangement, so much energy and really fun to watch.” BrassPalast also produce original music, which is in a similar style to the Withers cover, and their first original song “Combat” is already available on YouTube.https://www.youtube.com/embed/EHxAV0BgBDk
BrassPalast hail from the German town of Bayreuth, which is to the north of Nuremberg. The group performed their cover of “Ain’t No Sunshine” in July 2024, at the Bardentreffen festival in Nuremberg. It seems the group’s specialty is festivals, as their song “Combat” features performance footage from their two appearances at the Bass & BBQ Festival. BrassPalast sure know how to pick a cover, as seen in their choice of “Ain’t No Sunshine”. Bill Withers wrote the song and released it in July 1971 as the lead single from his debut studio album Just As I Am. The song has become a Withers classic over the years and is currently his only song on Spotify to surpass one billion streams.
