When it comes to powerful voices, you’ll struggle to find a better pairing than Celine Dion and Josh Groban when they performed The Prayer. You might think that this duet came about thanks to their management or record labels bringing them together, but you’d be wrong.
The seeds of this incredible performance were sown all the way back in 1998 when a stroke of luck propelled Josh Groban to stardom. That was when Josh received a call from the music producer David Foster asking him to stand in for the legendary Opera singer Andrea Bocelli at a rehearsal for the Grammy Awards.
Trying to fill Bocelli’s shoes would be a massive challenge for anyone, and Josh initially refused as he felt he simply wouldn’t have time to prepare. However, he also knew this could be his big break, a point David emphasised to him. Watch the full video below where Celine Dion explains how she first met Josh.
How could he pass up a once in a lifetime opportunity to sing with Celine Dion? He arrived at the venue and was thrust immediately into rehearsal. His nerves were obvious for all to see, and Celine later recalled:
“He’s so nervous and shaking…I was feeling nervous for him!” However, the instant he started singing, everything changed. He became the man we see in this breathtaking performance in 2008.
Celine herself organised this second performance. In the video, she explains how she was instrumental in Josh getting his chance at stardom and becoming the gifted performer we are all familiar with today. She was stunned by how powerful Josh’s voice was when he began to sing that day, and in the video, she invites him on stage to sing The Prayer with her again. It’s a beautiful reminder of the fateful day that brought these immensely talented performers together.
It’s a performance that is so beautiful and soulful that tears prick your eyes and the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. It’s impossible not to be touched by the obvious affection Josh and Celine have for each other all these years later.
It’s a pity they haven’t collaborated on any other songs as their voices seem to meld so well, but in the music industry, you can never say never, so let’s keep our fingers crossed!
