Producer David Foster sure has some talented friends, as seen when he invited divas Loren Allred and Pia Toscano to join him on a live cut of “Tell Him.” The two talented ladies put on a real vocal tour de force on the romantic ballad. “Tell Him” was originally sung by Céline Dion and Barbra Streisand, so Allred and Toscano sure had some big shoes to fill. Luckily for the audience, the two singers absolutely had the song on lock, doing more than justice to the 1997 hit.
Foster, who co-wrote “Tell Him,” invited Allred and Toscano to perform at his concert special An Intimate Evening with David Foster. Toscano opened the song with a passionate and soulful vocal, then Allred took the lead next with a more delicate vocal that built up to a big chorus, where the two vocal powerhouses sang together. With such an intricate vocal arrangement, it was a tall task to take on the duet, but the two ladies just knocked it out of the park.
Allred hosted the duet on her YouTube channel, where it gained 7.2 million views, which made it her third most popular video. She commented on the performance in the video description, saying “The first time I heard this song as a little girl, I was in absolute awe of the voices of Céline Dion and Barbra Streisand! If you had told me back then that I would be asked to perform it with David Foster and Pia Toscano, I truly wouldn’t have believed it. So honored to have shared the stage with them.”
It’s clear the performance was a special one for Allred, and fans were loving it too. They added comments below the video such as “Loren and Pia really complemented each other’s rich tone. They slayed!” and “I just want to point out… this is live! No edits, no Auto-Tune – just pure talent. This was just incredible.” The most popular video on Allred’s YouTube channel shows the American singer performing “Never Enough” at the same David Foster special.
“Tell Him” was written by Linda Thompson, Walter Afanasieff, and Foster in 1997, and the latter two also produced the song. Earlier that year, Dion performed Streisand’s song “I Finally Found Someone” at the Academy Awards. Streisand was impressed by Dion’s performance and suggested the two stars work together in the future.
Dion’s manager René Angélil subsequently called Foster and asked him to write a song for the pair, and the producer duly cooked up “Tell Him”. The song was a minor hit in North America but went Platinum in Australia, Netherlands, and Belgium, as well as Gold in the UK and France.
