Firefighters Urge Caution About Leaving Water Bottles in Cars

Firefighters are warning the public about the hidden dangers of leaving plastic water bottles in cars, as they can potentially start fires under certain conditions.

The hazard arises when sunlight passes through a water-filled bottle, acting similarly to a magnifying glass.

When sunlight filters through a plastic water bottle, it can concentrate light onto a flammable surface, increasing the risk of ignition.

Firefighters have demonstrated that this process can happen surprisingly quickly, sometimes within minutes.

In one case, a firefighter in Idaho discovered his car seat smoldering after sunlight, refracted by a water bottle, focused onto the upholstery.

To prevent such incidents, firefighters advise against leaving water bottles in vehicles, especially in direct sunlight.

If bottles must be stored in cars, it’s safer to keep them in shaded areas or to use opaque containers. Public awareness campaigns are being launched to spread this message and help reduce the risk of vehicle fires.
