Snoop Dogg & Sting = chalk and cheese, right? Well, Snoop and The Police legend showed that they got some serious chemistry on this cracking live duet of “Another Part Of Me” on The Voice finale. Sting kicked off the show with the iconic guitar part from The Police hit “Message in a Bottle,” while Snoop laid down a loose hip hop flow over the top. Sting also showed off his versatility by backing up Snoop in the vocal department and then taking his own verse later in the song.
The arrangement on the Snoop Dogg single really shows how timeless the guitar part from “Message in a Bottle” is. The part still sounds fresh in the 2024 performance, a whopping 45 years after the release of the song. It’s the perfect base for Snoop to go to town with his famous flow, and seeing the two legends tear it up together onstage definitely will put a grin on your face. We always have time for Sting here on The Music Man, and The Voice performance just shows again how versatile the legendary frontman is.
Snoop and Sting teamed up for their collab on December 11, 2024, and the video has already drawn 570,000 views in the month since it was uploaded. Fans loved watching the two icons work together, and added comments such as “Snoop and Sting is an unlikely collaboration, but the song doesn’t sound forced at all. They played their parts really well!” and “That was the coolest collaboration I’ve heard in a long while. Two totally different artists that came together to perform an awesome song!”
Sting and The Police’s music has been covered and sampled by many of the greatest modern artists. Another moment of recognition for Sting’s songwriting came when Bruno Mars sang The Police classics “So Lonely” and “Message In a Bottle” at The Kennedy Center in 2014. Sting was honoured by the center that year and sat proudly as Mars killed it on stage. The Music Man readers are no doubt used to hearing Mars sing pop and R&B, but hearing him take on The Police so beautifully is a real joy to watch.
The Police released “Message in a Bottle” as the lead single from their second studio album Reggatta de Blanc. Sting is the sole credited songwriter for the tune. However, the hugely distinctive and hooky guitar arpeggio part was actually created by The Police guitarist Andy Summers, working off the unembellished chords that Sting originally presented to him. Snoop Dogg sampled the guitar part in his 2024 single “Another Part of Me.” This scored Sting a writing credit on the single, and the English star also appeared as a vocalist on the studio version of the track.
