Two of the greatest stars of 2010s pop collided last summer, performing a surprise duet at Dolby Live in Las Vegas. As Bruno Mars reached the encore of his show, he shocked fans by inviting Lady Gaga to the stage for a magnificent rendition of their summer hit, “Die With A Smile.” While their single topped charts across the world last August, their Dolby set has gone just as viral, amassing an incredible 8M+ views during its first five days on YouTube.
As Bruno introduces their duet, his vast crowd can be heard screaming like Beatlemania never went out of fashion, while the spotlight shines on Bruno’s dreamy first verse. With his silk-smooth voice self-accompanied by clean guitar chords, the performance spawns instant magic that resonates through the entire arena, before Lady Gaga takes on the second verse, fleshed out with some enchanting harmonies.
Gaga is classy as ever, her all-white dress complemented by drag-esque makeup and a vintage-styled strawberry blonde wig, as she accompanies Bruno on the keys before letting loose in the bridge to a shower of fireworks.
Their rendition is spot-on; pitch-perfect as the studio recording and packed with retroism, from the duo’s fashion to their hints of 20th-century soft rock and soul, sprinkling flairs of jazz and R&B throughout their melodies.
Gaga fans won’t be shocked by how natural this “Die With A Smile” performance is, however. Bruno (aged 39) had invited the 38-year-old Manhattan superstar to collab on the half-written hit, but once Gaga reached the studio, they finished the song off in a day; recording and all — their story and Vegas performance testament to two of the most successful and established singer-songwriters on the pop scene today.
“Die With A Smile” reached #1 in 20 countries worldwide, #2 in the UK, and #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100, while the official music video passed 253M views in only two months. Fans have agreed that “this song HAS to win all the Grammys it is nominated for,” being blown away by how spectacular this live version is compared to the studio version, with viewers calling the retro-styled hit “a modern classic” and “the best collaboration of the year,” which is allegedly “saving this generation’s music.”
Bruno Mars hasn’t released a new solo album since 2016’s “24K Magic,” but he’s been staying in the spotlight as a collaborative artist and songwriter, lately becoming one half of the supergroup Silk Sonic, a music video choreographer, philanthropist, and designer.
